The proposal therein is somewhat belated. Mr.
Claxton was fully aware of the fact that Mr. Jeffries had been rec- -ommended by me for the post of Chief Assistant, and it is not until now that he raises any objection. He gives no specific reason for his : present attitude.
Mr. Jeffries, like Mr. Claxton, served as a junior in the Meteorological and Magnetical department at the Royal Observatory, Greenwich, afterwards going to the Royal Observatory, Cape of Good Hope, where he gained experience of Astronomical observa- -tions and calculations. While on leave in England he was recommended 1 for the post of First Assistant at this Observatory by Sir W. H. M. Christie, Astronomer, Royal, and he has now had four years experience of the work here, among other things, acquiring a useful knowledge of Weather Forecasts and Storm Warnings.
Since Mr. Plummer left in January last he has been
acting as Chief Assistant to my entire satisfaction, although he has received no extra pay in that regard.
